Rainbow Affinity - LGBTIQ+SB Affirmative Practice Training
LGBTIQ+SB Affirmative Practice Training for folk working in the AOD Sector
Jack (he/they) is a proud trans man, Social Worker and founder of Rainbow Affinity, which delivers professional development to help practitioners and organisations provide affirming and culturally safer services for LGBTIQ+SB communities. He has extensive experience across the mental health and AOD sectors, spanning counselling, training, advocacy and research. Jack received the LGBTIQA+ Worker Award at the 2024 Australian Winter School Conference (QNADA) and is currently contributing to a national research project with the University of Sydney, UNSW, La Trobe University and NADA exploring how trans people in Australia seek AOD support and how these experiences can be improved.
Research tells us that LGBTIQ+SB people in Australia use alcohol and other drugs at higher rates and often begin use at younger ages compared to the general population. Despite the LGBTIQ+SB community being recognised as a priority population in national AOD strategies, LGBTIQ+SB people continue to face significant barriers to accessing culturally competent and affirming support when they are looking to make changes to their AOD use.
In fact, the biggest barrier for LGBTIQ+SB people seeking support for their alcohol and other drug use has found to be the lack of an affirmative provider. Addressing this gap in knowledge is crucial for improving treatment uptake among LGBTIQ+SB populations and reducing the health burden linked to impactful substance use within this group.
This webinar will touch on some of the key concepts I typically cover during my training including what is affirmative practice, and why is it important, the prevalence of substance use in the LGBTIQ+SB community (contemporary research and data), and a few practical ways to provide culturally safer and more affirming services to the LGBTIQ+SB community who are seeking support for their AOD use.
