Trauma Informed Acceptance & Commitment Therapy

29 Jun. 2021

Connect & Learn is a series of case-based webinars funded by DH, designed to support AOD clinicians throughout regional and metropolitan Victoria. Webinars are presented by experienced clinicians currently working in the AOD sector and facilitated by Turning Point.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, commonly known as ACT is a third wave cognitive behavioural therapy created by Steven C Hayes. The core message is accepting what is out of your personal control and commitment to taking action that moves you towards a life worth living.

The aim of ACT is to increase psychological flexibility, to be present to the moment, practicing mindful self-awareness and openness to our experience, to make room for discomfort or experiences we disown or avoid and know what is important to us so that we can take actions towards what we value. Through an exploration of the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) Framework and a trauma informed lens (TACT), the webinar will provide participants with the opportunity to:

1. Learn the principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

2. Consider the implications for people with a history of trauma

3. Learn how ACT can be applied to working with people seeking to change their substance use
