UN CDN votes to remove cannabis and cannabis resin from Schedule IV

After a series of reccommendations by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in January 2019 to change the scope of control of cannabis and cannabis-related substances, the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CDN) has voted to action one of the five reccommendations.

On 2 December, 53 nations voted and carried the following reccommendation from WHO 27 to 25 votes:

  • WHO recommendation to delete cannabis and cannabis resin from Schedule IV of the 1961 Convention, but to maintain it in Schedule I of the 1961 Convention

This means cannabis no longer sits with schedule IV drugs such as heroin. Each country makes their own decisions about illicit substances, although this reclassification by the UN opens the door for other nations to follow.
