Medication Management Support for NT AOD Workers

AADANT, with funding support from NT PHN, has developed a suite of practical medication management resources to strengthen safety, consistency and confidence across AOD residential services in the Northern Territory.

These resources have been created to support non-clinical and clinical staff who assist clients with medication, particularly in remote and regional areas. Together, they aim to:

  • Improve medication safety and compliance
  • Support consistent, culturally safe medication practices
  • Strengthen staff confidence when assisting clients
  • Reduce medication errors and improve client wellbeing
  • Increase understanding of legal and regulatory responsibilities

What the resource suite includes

Medication Management Handbook

This handbook provides essential guidance for AOD residential services in the NT. It supports staff with safe medication procedures, legal requirements, documentation, and practical steps for assisting clients. While designed for non-clinical staff, it is also relevant to clinical workers such as Registered Nurses and Aboriginal Health Workers.

Medication Safety & Compliance Refresher Webinar

Delivered in partnership with genU Training, this refresher session increases staff confidence in safely handling and assisting with medications. It covers the “Rights” of medication administration, documentation, infection control, responding to medication errors and adverse reactions,

 and communication skills.

A recording is available for future training needs and can be accessed in the AADANT Members’ Portal.

Webinar Series: Legal Requirements, Client Safety & Documentation

This webinar series builds on the Client Assist Medication Training by exploring legal responsibilities, client safety, record-keeping and recognising and responding to risks.

Webinar 1: Medication Safety & Client Care in NT Residential AOD Services

This webinar provides a practical overview of safe medication support in NT residential AOD services. We’ll unpack your responsibilities, the NT legal framework, and the skills required to recognise risks, support client wellbeing, and maintain compliance. You’ll learn the “Seven Rights” of medication administration, best practices for handling and storing medications, how to document and report safely, and how to respond when client conditions change. By the end, you’ll feel more confident in supporting medication safety and protecting clients in your care.

Webinar 2: Safe Medication Support in NT AOD Residential Services: Legal & Documentation Essentials

This webinar provides AOD residential workers with the essential knowledge needed to confidently and safely support clients with their medications in NT settings. We will explore your role and responsibilities, the NT legal and delegation requirements that guide safe practice, and the documentation standards that protect both clients and staff. You’ll also learn how to recognise and respond to risks, including errors, adverse reactions and changes in client condition, while upholding client rights and duty-of-care obligations. By the end of this session, you’ll have a stronger understanding of how to support medication safety in a way that is compliant, consistent and aligned with best practice.
